Gavin Scott Weir
I seek to capture the juxtaposition of ideas that the built environment encapsulates, sometimes architecturally arbitrary and contrasting, at others intentionally conceptually harmonious, cities are exciting visual urbanscapes.
I strive to create realism; I believe that a hyperrealist approach is necessary to focus attention equally on the immense manmade structures and minuscule detail, the crafted and those caused by the elements.
These spaces are often ignored as the multitudes hurry along. I want to show the drama of these spaces in my painting; the complex conditions of nature, weather and light that affects our perception of built environment, so that our comfortable recognition is challenged. I seek to remind myself and others of the aesthetic value of these spaces so influential in the development of us urbanites.
I choose this subject matter because the built environment is a vivid record of history as well as it holds our visions of the future and because these spaces hold such strong personal meaning for those who live in them. 2011 Born Canada, British Columbia.
